Smashing the Glass

This is our first time published in the Jewish wedding blog Smashing the Glass. They captured Michaela’s and Zac’s wedding perfectly and what a day it was!

The wedding took place over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. The guests arrived to Rome from all over the world. The bride and her family is from the Washington DC area, The groom is from Zimbabwe and they both had family living in Israel who came to the wedding as well. It rained on and off throughout the day. Just enough to create a romantic aura around the wedding but not enough to change anything about the wedding day itself.

The Grand Synagogue in Rome is breathtaking. Very historic and ornate it needed little in the way of embellishment. The Roman Jewish community is among the oldest anywhere dating back to Ancient Roman times. The couple had the great honor of having their wedding celebrated by the chief Rabbi of Rome, Rabbi Riccardo di Segni.

After the ceremony the couple made their getaway in a pistachio green vintage Fiat 500 convertible. Even though it was a Jewish wedding it was still in Rome and the Vatican piazza is one of the most picturesque locations for couple photos. In addition the Bernini designed porticos provided cover from the rain and the opportunity for the bride and groom to spend some quiet time together right before rejoining the group.

Ah the splendors of Rome. By day or night it never ceases to amaze me, even after all these years. It is a veritable treasure trove of history, architecture and art. I always say that if Rome were divided into five different cities they would all be “must see” tourist sites. Nearly every period in history has left its mark of Rome and its quiet beauty has endured the ages. It is truly the Eternal City.
