vatican weddings

For many devout Catholics, nothing could be more special than being married at the spiritual center of it all, Saint Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican. The wedding would take place in a small side chapel, The Chapel of the Choir, and only take place in the mornings at 11:00 am.
To be married at the Vatican you must fulfill all of the Catholic requirements and this must be done in the diocese where you regularly attend mass. It is the same protocol, known as Pre-Cana in the United States, that must be completed in order to be eligible for marriage within the church. Wedding requests go through the Ufficio Matrimonio (wedding office) at Saint Peter’s and they are very strict. They will not accept elopements and often only accept weddings with at least 15 guests in attendance. They are wary of Saint Peter’s becoming a touristic wedding chapel and their acceptance policy seeks to avoid this.

The Vatican has a strict dress code for weddings. Failure to comply could result in your not being allowed to be married at Saint Peter’s even if you have complied with all the documentation and procedures up to that point. The bride must have her shoulders, upper arms, back and knees covered. The veil does not suffice and any bolero or shawl that does cover cannot be too sheer. The same dress requirements apply to the guests.

The Vatican no longer allows wedding planners and, consequently, we no longer work there. But you can do the process on your own. Your application should be made in writing by your parish priest and sent to the Parish Office, address below, up to twelve months ahead of the desired wedding date. The letter should include a personal note from your priest on your behalf. The request should include your first three choices of dates for your marriage, in order of preference. They will evaluate your eligibility and, if accepted, will give you the first date that is available from among your choices. You are welcome and encouraged to bring your own priest to celebrate the wedding. For the Vatican office you can write to:
